Keep Your Smile Looking Beautiful with Natural-Looking Dentures

Dentures Albury

Dentures are prosthodontic devices used to fill in the gaps created by missing teeth.

Missing teeth are common among adults and elderly people and can be caused by various things such as decay, periodontal disease, poor oral hygiene, or accidents caused by sport or other injuries.

Dentures are used to restore the function of your jaw and your appearance.

Your Albury dentist will examine your jaw and any remaining teeth and discuss restoration options with you.

Types of Dentures

Conventional dentures are placed after the remaining teeth are extracted, and tissues have healed, which may take many months.

Immediate dentures are worn immediately after the remaining teeth are extracted. You can eat without putting excessive pressure on your natural teeth while waiting for your new permanent dentures to be made.

Partial dentures are made to fill the gap left by missing teeth. They can be removed when needed, helping you feel more confident if you’re missing a small number of teeth.

Denture-Making Procedure

The denture-making procedure takes a few weeks and several appointments.

Once your Albury dentist determines what type of denture is best for you, here are the steps:

  1. Make moulds and impressions and get measurements of the jaw.
  2. Make models, wax forms, and/or plastic patterns in the exact shape and position of the dentures. You will “try in” this model, and the denture will be assessed for colour, shape, and fit before the final denture is cast.
  3. Cast a final denture.
  4. Adjustments will be made as necessary.

Denture Care in Albury

Don’t let dentures dry out! Soak them in a denture cleaner or plain water when you’re not wearing them. DO NOT use boiling water; this causes your dentures to deform.

Brush your dentures. Brushing your dentures daily will remove food and plaque and help prevent stains.

Take care of your mouth. Brushing your gums, tongue and palate every morning using a soft-bristled toothbrush before wearing dentures stimulates blood circulation in your tissues and helps remove plaque.

Consult your dentist. Visit your Albury dentist in case of denture damage. Do not try to repair them yourself, as this can damage them beyond repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dentures made of?
Dentures are comprised of a plate, metal or acrylic, designed to fit over the bone and soft tissues of your jaw. Ceramic or acrylic false teeth are attached to the plate, matching any remaining teeth to create as natural a look as possible.
Are dentures the right treatment for me?
Depending on the severity of your case, we will either create partial dentures in the case of only a few missing teeth or complete dentures to replace a full set of missing teeth.

Dentures are removable and easy to clean. The false teeth will discolour like regular teeth, so proper dental care at home and regular check-ups will be necessary to adequately take care of your dentures.

How long do dentures last?

Due to normal wear, your dentist may need to remake your dentures or partially reconstruct them, such as reline or rebase the appliance.

Dentures may need replacing every 5 to 8 years, and dentures made from plastic may require replacement sooner than those made with acrylic resin. Rebasing will only require remaking the gum portion and structural base of the denture while keeping the existing denture teeth. Your dentist may also need to remake your dentures as you age because your mouth’s size naturally changes.

How should dentures fit?

New dentures will take time to get used to. There is a settling period after the moment of fitting, which can last anywhere from 5 to 8 hours before the dentures settle into your mouth. It will take some time for your gums to adjust to the appliance, and the adjustment period can be different for everyone.
